What is a high-speed blender?
High-speed blenders are typically professional blenders with a high wattage, which results in increased speed and performance.
High-speed blenders utilize mighty motors to transform fibrous and hard foods into silky smoothness. Kale leaves, spinach stems, and stringy dates all become ultra-creamy purees when blended at high speed.
Smoothie enthusiasts adore this because it allows for the incorporation of additional fiber and nutrition into their beverages. Chefs love this because it results in incredibly smooth pureed soups and sauces.
Initially, they were only found in commercial kitchens, but manufacturers have significantly reduced the cost, making them a much more accessible item for home cooks. Currently, only two manufacturers of high-speed blenders genuinely stand out from the crowd – Vitamix and Blendtec.
Is a High-Speed Blender Necessary?
Before you invest in a high-speed blender, here are some factors to consider
High-speed blenders frequently have a peak horsepower rating of 2 or 3 (1 horsepower equals 746 watts), which refers to the amount of power generated when the motor encounters resistance.
This initial boost in torque facilitates the beginning of the blending process, but the motor’s power quickly returns to its running horsepower (a split second later). As a result, the advantage of peak horsepower is negligible.
Simply put high-speed blenders are more powerful. The motors have a higher horsepower rating, and the blades are more authentic. Additionally, they typically have a larger canister and a variety of accessories such as to-go cups and tampers to assist with the blending process.
Blender controls are another point of differentiation. While experts agree that a three-speed (low, medium, high) blender will suffice, a good number of blenders feature up to ten speeds in addition to pre-programmed functions, allowing you to choose whether to puree, liquefy, or crush.
On the other hand, the variable speed settings compensate for the higher price tag. The ability to gradually adjust between speeds while blending ensures that you achieve the desired consistency and texture.
By starting the blend on two and gradually increasing to 8 over 30 seconds, you’ll see how the texture of your ingredients changes. Alternatively, begin on five and finish with a 30-second blast on 10. Its combination of power and functionality distinguishes a high-speed blender.
The design of a blender, including the container’s size and material, the blades, and even the lid’s tightness, often sets one model apart from another.
Polycarbonate, glass, and stainless steel are the three materials used in blender containers. Because the friction and force generated by a high-speed blender can shatter glass, high-speed blenders almost exclusively use polycarbonate or stainless steel containers.
We wish someone had invented a glass container because glass is transparent, scratch-resistant, and less prone to odor retention. However, conventional blenders are currently only available in glass containers.
A high-speed blender comes with stainless steel blades that have been fully hardened. Neither the Vitamix nor Blendtec blenders have sharpened the fixed blades (what mixes things up is the powerful motor). In terms of design, Vitamix uses four-tipped blades, whereas Blendtec uses two-prong blades.
Sharp blades are found on all standard blenders, regardless of the model (which is a problem because they dull over time and become less and less effective). There is no vortex created by these blades, unlike the ones on a Vitamix or Blendtec blender. As a result, the top and bottom ingredients don’t mix, and the opposite is true as well.
A high-speed blender can cost between $200 and more than $600. While Vitamix is the industry standard, it is not the only option. Additionally, the Wolf, Breville, Ninja, and Blendtec brands offer reliable models.
The best way to determine which blender is best for you is to conduct research, read reviews, and shop around. Certain brands even sell refurbished models at a discount.
